Cloudflare Lets Websites Charge AI Agents Per Request

Must read

AI agents are about to go shopping, and Cloudflare wants to run the till. Its new gateway lets sites charge bots per request, no account or API key needed, just a stablecoin.

Cloudflare has opened a closed beta of Monetization Gateway, a service that lets businesses charge AI agents for access to websites, APIs, tools and datasets based on actual use, the company announced Oct. 8.

As agents increasingly browse sites, call APIs, and consume data on behalf of users, Cloudflare said that subscriptions and account-based payments create friction for businesses and machines alike. The gateway is designed so an agent can discover a resource’s price, pay and gain access within a single web request.

Domain owners can apply usage-based pricing to websites, APIs, Model Context Protocol tools, and datasets without building their own payment infrastructure, the company said.

How it works

The gateway uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code and the x402 payment protocol. Payment instructions are returned as part of the request, rather than sending an agent to a separate checkout page. Once payment is authorized and settled, the agent gets the resource.

Sellers decide which requests require payment, set prices and control where the money goes. They can write pricing rules based on URLs, headers and query parameters. Cloudflare handles payment verification and settlement, failures and retries, analytics and changes to the x402 protocol.

Payments currently settle on the Base blockchain in USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar.

Early uses

Cloudflare said it already uses the gateway in production in several cases:

  • Cloudflare AI Gateway: U.S.-based customers can pay for inference at request time for select AI models using x402, as an alternative to keeping a prepaid credit balance.
  • Ceramic.ai: the web search provider lets agents pay for individual search requests without an API key. Ceramic.ai said it operates a proprietary index of more than 40 billion pages.
  • Stocktwits: the financial social network offers market signals, including sentiment, message volume, followers and trending tickers, to agents on a per-request basis, without a traditional data license for every use case.
  • API2PDF: the PDF-generation service lets users and agents skip creating an account and obtaining an API key. Under its variable pricing, an agent sets a maximum price for a request and pays for what it uses.

What Cloudflare says comes next

Cloudflare argues that the approach spares an agent from needing a commercial relationship with every service it uses. Payment itself becomes the way an agent gains access.

The company plans to add payment options, transaction logs, agent discovery features and identity tools over time.
