The new MCP server lets tools like GitHub Copilot and Cursor execute cloud commands in plain language, while Nutanix enforces existing controls.
Nutanix, a hybrid cloud computing company, today announced a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP), designed to enable customers to use AI tools to automate daily cloud operations. The MCP server is open-source software that implements the Model Context Protocol specification, allowing AI agents and developer tools to interact with NCP through the Nutanix Prism v4 API.
With the launch, Nutanix says customers can build agentic AI applications with access to a tools layer for executing secure actions on NCP, intended to help IT teams speed up operations across large hybrid cloud environments without losing visibility or control.
Operating hybrid cloud environments has traditionally required deep technical expertise and strict access controls. While AI assistants can speed up the management of these systems, enterprises need assurance that AI-initiated actions are safe and authorized — a requirement Nutanix says applies to everything from major system upgrades to routine network performance monitoring.
Nutanix says the new MCP server addresses this by acting as a secure passthrough between AI assistants — including GitHub Copilot, Claude Code and Cursor — and an organization’s hybrid cloud environment, translating plain-language requests into infrastructure API actions while enforcing existing corporate security and access policies. The company says this approach lets IT teams automate routine operations and build custom AI-driven workflows with more confidence than direct, unmediated AI access would allow.

“Nutanix has a long history of using automation to simplify complex cloud operations. The MCP server is an exciting next step on our journey, allowing us to bring the power of autonomous AI agents to cloud management,” said Thomas Cornely, executive vice president of product management at Nutanix. “By creating a secure gateway between AI tools and our platform, we are giving customers the confidence to safely use AI to operate and govern their hybrid cloud environments.”
The MCP server is built on the Nutanix Prism V4 API Gateway, letting connected AI tools inherit NCP’s existing governance and access controls, according to the company. Rather than allowing AI assistants to make unsupervised changes to production environments, Nutanix says IT operators can use them to analyze system health, surface diagnostics and stage automation workflows, while retaining oversight through built-in “human-in-the-loop” checkpoints.
Architectural Governance and Developer Capabilities
Nutanix says the Prism V4 API Gateway handles all execution, governance and security controls for the MCP server, and is designed to support:
- Fine-grained role-based access control, limiting autonomous agents to executing only the specific API calls they’ve been explicitly authorized to perform.
- Throttling and metering, intended to prevent agent swarm attacks while tracking API usage across automated workflows.
- Comprehensive auditing, generating system logs that record which AI agent initiated a given command.
- Asynchronous task management, offloading long-running operations so agents can track progress and completion status.
For developers, Nutanix says the MCP server is designed to make building automation tools faster by giving AI coding assistants system blueprints upfront, allowing developers to generate platform-ready scripts in languages including Python, Go, Java, JavaScript, PowerShell, curl, or any REST- and JSON-compatible format. The company says this lets teams configure security permissions through a single interface or build custom AI agents to manage Nutanix infrastructure end to end.
