DeepMind’s Alumni Are Building the Next Wave of AI

Must read

From a $1.1 billion seed round to stealth ventures across three continents, Google DeepMind’s diaspora is quietly reshaping the global AI landscape.

Google DeepMind alumni have founded dozens of European startups — or are planning to — in the past 18 months, according to new data.

The headline act came last month, when David Silver, one of DeepMind’s most celebrated researchers, launched a new U.K. artificial intelligence lab, Ineffable Intelligence, which secured a striking $1.1 billion in seed funding. But Silver is just one of 112 DeepMind alumni who have started or are believed to be starting a company in that period, the data shows. Most are focused on AI.

The figures were compiled by Evertrace, a data firm that advises venture capital firms and investors on investment decisions. Evertrace drew on a range of public sources, including Companies House filings, patents, and research grants.

“We are seeing that DeepMind is doing for AI what Klarna and Spotify did for European tech,” said Jacob Houlberg, Evertrace’s co-founder. “It’s compounding into a founder factory. David Silver is the headline, but the pipeline behind him is the real story.”

Of the 112 startups identified, 70 are based in the United States, 28 in the United Kingdom, three in Spain, two each in Switzerland, Germany and Canada, and one each in Austria, Poland, Hong Kong, India, and South Korea. Thirty-eight alumni have formally started a new company, while 74 have moved into what is described as a “stealth” role — a term commonly used when an individual is in the early stages of launching a startup, though it has not been independently verified that every such role corresponds to a new venture. Each startup identified has a LinkedIn company page and an active website.

Prominent names

Among the most notable alumni is Saining Xie, a former DeepMind scientist and computer science professor at New York University, who in 2022 began the research project that gave rise to the diffusion transformer. Xie is now chief science officer and co-founder at Advanced Machine Intelligence, the high-profile AI world model startup founded by former Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun.

Another prominent figure, senior researcher Wojciech Marian Czarnecki, has joined Ineffable Intelligence as chief scientific officer, though he does not appear on the list as he is not a founder.

Noah Goodman, a former DeepMind scientist and Stanford professor of psychology and computer science, is a co-founder of U.S. AI startup Humans&, which aims to augment rather than replace human workers. The company raised $480 million in a seed round earlier this year.

United Kingdom

In the U.K., former DeepMind scientist Olivier Henaff is now a co-founder of Cursive, an AI foundation model startup that recently received backing from Sovereign AI, a government-backed venture capital fund.

A trio of former DeepMind interns have also launched their own companies. Guanming Wang has founded General Instinct, a vision-language-model AI startup; Arhaan Shaikh has co-founded Wizzaid, a healthcare data infrastructure company; and Abdul Raheem Nazir has co-founded Experiqlabs, a tech research startup. Edward Hughes, a reinforcement learning researcher at DeepMind, is currently in a stealth role.

Europe

Across the continent, Alexander Taboriskiy, a former software engineering lead on Gemini at DeepMind, is the chief executive and co-founder of Mentiora, a Zurich-based startup building what it describes as a next-generation AI platform. Former DeepMind consultant Angelos Chionis has founded FormalistAI, a Paris-based AI legal technology company. Ann-Kristin Balve, who received a scholarship from DeepMind, co-founded Omnisent, a Munich-based defense technology startup.

United States

In the United States, Pierre-Alexandre Kamienny, a former DeepMind scientist who worked on Gemini, is a co-founder of Kinro, which is building AI-powered sales agents. Pouya Samangouei, a former DeepMind search engineer, has founded ROI-AI, an AI agent platform.
