Cloudflare, the leading connectivity cloud company, today released new analysis from Cloudflare Radar revealing how the 2026 FIFA World Cup transformed global Internet traffic patterns. Drawing on traffic observed across Cloudflare’s global network, the report shows how one of the world’s largest sporting events influenced online behavior in real time, from dramatic drops in Internet activity during kickoff to surges in browsing during halftime and after matches.Â
The analysis demonstrates how globally shared live events continue to reshape Internet usage at an unprecedented scale. As billions of fans tuned in across time zones, Cloudflare observed distinct traffic patterns reflecting when audiences paused their online activity to watch matches, returned online during breaks, and re-engaged after the final whistle.

Key findings
- Argentina had the greatest global impact on Internet activity. Across the tournament, Argentina’s matches generated the largest worldwide shifts in Internet traffic, with the typical country’s traffic deviating by roughly 17% whenever the team played, more than any other nation.
- The biggest Internet event wasn’t the final. Argentina’s quarterfinal against Switzerland produced the largest worldwide change in Internet traffic of any match during the tournament, surpassing even the championship game in its impact on global online behavior.
- Kickoff consistently reduced Internet activity. Across participating countries and many international markets, Internet traffic fell noticeably as matches began, reflecting millions of fans shifting their attention to live broadcasts. Traffic typically rebounded during halftime and after matches concluded.
- Traffic patterns reflected local viewing habits. Because matches were played across multiple North American time zones, Internet usage varied by region, with countries adapting their online activity to local broadcast schedules. Late-night matches in some markets created unusual traffic peaks and troughs outside normal daily usage patterns.
- The “time-zone paradox”: The biggest shifts in Internet activity occur when matches air between midnight and 8 a.m. local time, when people are least likely to be online. Fans staying up late (or waking early) pushed traffic well above normal, more than doubling it in some countries.
- The “three-minute phenomenon”: Even short hydration breaks caused noticeable spikes in Internet activity as viewers quickly checked back in online before returning to the match.
