ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government join GenAI.mil as the Pentagon expands AI access — while its dispute with Anthropic remains unresolved.
The Pentagon has launched custom versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok, giving 3 million civilian and military personnel access to generative AI tools tailored to “warfighter needs.”
ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are now part of GenAI.mil, a centralized, secure portal the Department of Defense launched in December 2025. The platform, which offered only Google’s Gemini when it first launched, is designed to give department employees access to commercial frontier AI models without routing sensitive government data through ordinary consumer channels. The military versions are exempt from the data collection practices common in consumer tech products.
GenAI.mil has proven popular, according to the department: the platform has onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users out of the department’s roughly 3 million personnel.
The additions are part of the Pentagon’s broader push to use AI tools to accelerate its work and maintain a technological edge without sacrificing security. They also underscore the continued absence of Anthropic’s Claude model from the platform, following the Pentagon’s dispute with the company. Anthropic was designated a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration — a designation it is currently contesting in court — after the company declined to give the Pentagon unrestricted use of its AI tools, insisting instead on certain safety guardrails.

ChatGPT Mil, developed through OpenAI’s OpenAI for Government program, offers an experience familiar to commercial ChatGPT users, centered on chat, files, projects and custom GPTs, according to the Defense Department. The tool is intended to support document-heavy, routine unclassified work such as administrative tasks, logistics, planning and policy, with additional features expected over time.
The department framed Grok’s capabilities in broader, more explicitly militaristic terms. “Starshield AI’s Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration,” the Defense Department said in its announcement. SpaceX’s Starshield AI is a secure satellite network built on the company’s existing Starlink infrastructure.

The department said Grok would allow military personnel “to execute missions faster and with greater precision across numerous operational contexts, ranging from market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply-chain management for logisticians.”
The Pentagon has struck deals with several other technology companies as part of its effort to expand AI capabilities, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia and Reflection AI.
