Tencent Cloud Makes AI Bot Controls Free for All

Must read

Tencent Cloud EdgeOne launches free AI Crawler Control and CAPTCHA tools to help developers block AI scraping, cut bandwidth costs, and protect digital content.

As generative AI models consume ever-larger volumes of online data, developers are grappling with a growing problem: how to stop aggressive automated scraping without blocking legitimate users. Tencent Cloud EdgeOne said that it is making new bot-management tools available to all customers, including those on its free plan, to help address that challenge.

The update introduces two core capabilities — AI Crawler Control and CAPTCHA Page — designed to give website operators greater control over how AI bots interact with their content.

Tackling the Crawler “Whac-A-Mole” Problem

Modern AI crawlers behave very differently from traditional search bots. They operate at massive scale, change identities frequently, and often mimic legitimate user traffic. For many developers, blocking them has become a frustrating cycle of chasing new IP addresses and rewriting rules as soon as old ones stop working.

Tencent Cloud says its AI Crawler Control feature is built to end that cycle. Using advanced User-Agent recognition that is continuously updated, the system can identify mainstream AI bots such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended.

Rather than writing custom scripts or maintaining complex block lists, users can configure policies directly in the EdgeOne console. The platform offers several response options:

  • Monitor: Track crawler behavior without restricting access
  • Block: Stop unauthorized scraping immediately
  • Allow: Grant access to approved bots
  • Challenge: Trigger a verification step for suspicious traffic

This approach allows developers to protect original content and reduce infrastructure costs while still permitting beneficial AI services when appropriate.

Smarter Defense With CAPTCHA Verification

The second major addition is a CAPTCHA Page feature aimed at stopping automated attacks and abuse. When EdgeOne detects suspicious bot activity, it can automatically prompt a human-verification challenge to confirm whether the visitor is legitimate.

Tencent Cloud said the tool is designed to minimize disruption for real users while protecting high-value use cases such as digital content platforms, e-commerce promotions, and financial transactions — areas where automated scripts can distort metrics or overload systems.

Moving From Defense to Control

“With the rapid evolution of AI technology, the governance of content and data access is a long-term challenge,” said Yun Li, head of the Tencent Cloud EdgeOne product team. “By making our Basic Bot Management capabilities free, we aim to help every developer shift from passive defense to active management, giving them full control over their digital assets.”

The new features are available immediately through the EdgeOne console. Tencent Cloud said it plans to continue expanding its bot-management and security capabilities as AI-driven traffic grows.
