Furthermore, AI can dynamically adapt ransomware files over time, enhancing their stealth and efficacy. Further research unveiled AI’s capacity to automate the entire phishing process, achieving these alarming success rates at an astounding 95% reduction in cost. Looking ahead to 2025, a CrowdStrike study projected that AI-generated phishing emails could achieve a click-through rate of 54%, dwarfing the 12% rate of human-written content.

Microsoft, for instance, boasts AI capabilities that can create an effective voice clone from a mere 3-second audio clip.

While legitimate applications for voice cloning technology exist—such as Lovo, which has seen a 6,300% increase in searches over the past five years—this AI-powered advancement has been a boon for vishing schemes. Voice phishing attacks witnessed a staggering 442% increase in the latter half of last year alone, propelled by the escalating sophistication of AI voice cloning. 

A troubling statistic reveals that one in four employees struggles to distinguish between real and deepfaked audio, with 6.5% inadvertently surrendering sensitive data during fraudulent vishing calls. High-profile incidents abound: the 2023 MGM Resorts cyberattack, costing $100 million, originated from an AI-replicated employee voice gaining system access. 

More recently, in 2024, a finance worker in Hong Kong was duped into wiring $25 million after a deepfaked Zoom call with the CFO. These incidents highlight the ease with which vishing can be combined with persistent, targeted “traditional” phishing campaigns, as evidenced by thwarted attempts involving thousands of preparatory emails followed by fraudulent “tech support” vishing calls on Microsoft Teams, underscoring the increasingly potent role of AI in cyberattacks.

This substantial return on investment explains why the AI cybersecurity market, valued at $24.82 billion in 2024, is forecast to skyrocket to $146.5 billion by 2034, boasting a remarkable 19.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

Many AI cybersecurity solutions have emerged as direct countermeasures to new AI-driven threats. For instance, the demand for AI voice detectors to combat “vishing” is evident, with searches surging 6,500% in the last five years. Companies like AI Voice Detector offer solutions to analyze audio files or browser extensions to check for AI-generated voices online, having already detected 90,000 AI voices for over 25,000 clients. 

Crucially, some responsibility for preventing voice phishing also falls on the creators of AI voice cloning technology, leading to the rise of “AI watermarking.” ElevenLabs, a leading voice cloning provider whose searches are up “99x+” in five years, has implemented a “speech classifier” tool to detect the likelihood of a clip originating from its own AI generator. Beyond voice, Google has pioneered an invisible watermark for text generated by its Gemini AI, definitively labeling its provenance—a breakthrough with significant implications for education and detecting suspicious AI-crafted emails. Meta has followed suit with Meta Video Seal for “deepfake detection,” an open-sourced tool that aims to foster collaboration and comparison of video watermarking effectiveness.

AI Cybersecurity Fortifies the Cloud

Cybersecurity must evolve to counter AI threats and keep pace with the ongoing mass migration to cloud services. By 2023, 70% of organizations reported more than half of their infrastructure in the cloud, with 65% operating multi-cloud systems and 80% storing sensitive data there. Forecasts for 2027 indicate that 90% of organizations will adopt a hybrid cloud approach, with public cloud spending projected to reach $720 billion this year. This shift has ignited a corresponding surge in Cloud-Native Application Protection Platforms (CNAPPs), with “CNAPP” searches up 2,667% in the last five years.

CNAPPs are designed from the ground up for cloud security, moving beyond reactive, ad-hoc fixes. AI plays a pivotal role in these systems. Ron Matchoro, Head of Product at Microsoft Defender for Cloud, aptly described AI as the “final missing piece of the CNAPP puzzle.” Prisma Cloud, a prominent CNAPP, has deeply integrated AI into its solutions, using it as a “force multiplier” for Attack Surface Management (ASM). 

AI enhances data collection speed, quality, and reliability by making ASM more efficient and effective. “Prisma Cloud” searches have risen by 87% in the last five years, reflecting its growing influence. The platform also addresses cybersecurity risks inherent in the legitimate use of AI within businesses, securing vulnerabilities related to potential data exposure or unsafe/unauthorized model usage.

AI Takes Aim at “Zero-Day” Vulnerabilities

Traditionally, cybersecurity has operated primarily defensively. However, AI holds the potential to shift this paradigm, enabling proactive strikes against “zero-day” vulnerabilities—those previously undiscovered flaws in systems for which no patches yet exist. The result is “Big Sleep,” an AI agent already discovering its first real-world zero-day vulnerability: an “exploitable stack buffer underflow” in SQLite, a widely used open-source database. Google’s team promptly reported the flaw, which was fixed on the same day in early October 2024. 

Big Sleep’s achievement marks a significant milestone: “the first time an AI agent has found a previously unknown memory-safety issue in widely-used real-world software.” Microsoft is also active in this space, expanding its Zero Day Quest bug bounty program, offering $4 million in awards for high-impact cloud and AI vulnerabilities. Naturally, if AI can expose these weaknesses for defenders, it can also do so for attackers, necessitating heightened vigilance against novel forms of cybercrime. This remains a nascent but up-and-coming area of AI cybersecurity.

New Investment Fuels AI Cybersecurity Growth

The AI cybersecurity sector is experiencing a significant surge in investment. Internally, cybersecurity firms consistently dedicate a higher percentage of their revenue to research and development than other software industries. Externally, venture investment in cybersecurity soared by 43% in 2024, reaching nearly $11.6 billion—an all-time high, excluding the “COVID bubble” quarters. The search for “invest in AI” is up 940% in five years, reflecting this heightened interest.

Major players are making strategic moves. Cybersecurity giant Wiz recently confirmed its acquisition of Israeli startup Dazz, bolstering its AI capabilities for building a robust CNAPP. Dazz, specializing in cloud security remediation, had a $50 million funding round at a $400 million valuation in July 2024, with the acquisition eventually closing at an estimated $450 million in cash and shares. 

Dazz’s technology leverages AI to find and fix critical cloud infrastructure issues, boasts an 810% reduction in mean time to remediation, shrinking risk windows from weeks to hours. Further consolidating the market, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has agreed to acquire Wiz in a deal potentially worth up to $32 billion, pending regulatory approval.

Beyond these colossal deals, other significant investments are shaping the landscape. Proofpoint acquired Normalyze, a “data-first security company” using AI to classify and assess sensitive data risks, bridging AI security gaps for the latter. Crowdstrike acquired Adaptive Shield for $300 million, while data loss prevention startup MIND.io secured $11 million in seed funding for its AI-driven solutions. Cyera, which uses AI to enhance data cyber-resilience and compliance, raised its second $300 million funding round in November 2024, achieving a $3 billion valuation. And in December, SandboxAQ raised $300 million to apply quantum technology to AI development in fields including cybersecurity.
