Berget AI secures €2.1M to build sovereign, open-model AI infrastructure in Sweden, targeting European demand for data control amid new EU regulations.
Swedish artificial intelligence company Berget AI has raised €2.1 million (SEK 24 million) in new funding, as European organisations increasingly seek greater control over their data and AI systems.
The investment arrives at a pivotal moment. AI is rapidly becoming critical infrastructure, while tougher regulatory requirements, rising geopolitical tensions, and the European Union’s new AI legislation are driving demand for locally managed AI workflows.
Berget AI was founded by Christian Landgren, a prominent Swedish digital entrepreneur and activist, and Andreas Lundmark, an AI specialist with extensive experience from Boston Consulting Group.
The company is developing a platform that allows organisations to build AI applications using open language models hosted on sovereign infrastructure in Sweden. The approach ensures that sensitive data remains within national borders and under European jurisdiction.
Berget AI positions its service as a streamlined alternative for developers who want to deploy AI quickly without managing complex infrastructure—offering a middle path between U.S. hyperscalers and costly on-premise systems.
By delivering a turnkey, full-stack AI platform, the company aims to combine ease of use with data sovereignty, open technology, and sustainable operations.

“More and more organisations do not want to place sensitive data on global cloud platforms,” Lundmark said. “We offer an accessible alternative that provides full control without requiring customers to build and operate their own infrastructure.”
Berget AI launched its first service shortly before summer 2025 and has since attracted strong interest from organisations that prioritise data control and compliance.
“We’ve seen that our offering addresses a very real market need,” Lundmark added. “We haven’t actively pursued sales so far, but now is the time to accelerate in order to capture the strong demand we are experiencing. Several new services are currently under development.”
The timing aligns with sweeping changes in Europe’s regulatory landscape. The EU AI Act is introducing stricter rules on transparency, traceability, and data governance, prompting public sector bodies and regulated industries to seek solutions that keep both data and AI models within EU borders.
“Sovereignty is moving from being a policy discussion to becoming a concrete and practical requirement for development teams,” Landgren said. “Our platform is built for this reality: local operations, open models, and technical control from day one.”

The funding round was led by Luminar Ventures, with participation from Wellstreet and Norrsken Evolve.
“Berget AI addresses a structural problem in Europe’s AI ecosystem: the lack of sovereign and scalable infrastructure,” said Jacob Key, General Partner at Luminar Ventures. “The team combines strong technical expertise with perfect timing.”
Rebecca Löthman Rydå, General Partner at Norrsken Evolve, added: “Open and sustainable AI infrastructure is crucial for Europe’s long-term resilience.”
The newly raised capital will be used primarily to accelerate product development and expand sales operations across Europe.
