Quantum Systems Buys FERNRIDE to Expand Defence Autonomy

Must read

Quantum Systems acquires FERNRIDE, adding autonomous ground vehicles to its defence stack and advancing Europe’s push for multi-domain unmanned systems.

Quantum Systems, an AI-powered unmanned systems company, announced the acquisition of FERNRIDE, expanding its autonomy portfolio to include autonomous ground mobility, in addition to its existing capabilities in aerial and mission software.

The deal brings FERNRIDE’s production-tested ground autonomy platform—already deployed in logistics, yard operations, and autonomous driving—into Quantum Systems’ growing defence and security ecosystem. Financial terms were not disclosed.

With the acquisition, Quantum Systems aims to create a connected, cross-domain autonomy stack in which air and ground systems operate as a unified whole. The integration will fold FERNRIDE’s technology into MOSAIC UXS, Quantum Systems’ autonomous mission software, enabling coordinated, multi-domain operations designed to improve situational awareness and decision-making.

FERNRIDE has built a reputation for deploying autonomous ground vehicles in demanding, real-world environments. In 2025, the company became the first in Europe to receive TÜV approval for autonomous trucks. Its cars have already undergone initial testing with the German Armed Forces, marking an early expansion into defence logistics.

“FERNRIDE has developed one of the most advanced and scalable autonomous ground platforms,” said Florian Seibel, co-chief executive and co-founder of Quantum Systems. “By integrating their technology into MOSAIC UXS, we are executing our vision of a connected ecosystem in which unmanned systems think, move, and act as a single entity across domains.”

For FERNRIDE, the acquisition reflects a strategic shift toward defence at a moment of heightened urgency in Europe. “Europe urgently needs sovereign autonomy solutions,” said Hendrik Kramer, chief executive and co-founder of FERNRIDE. “By joining forces with Quantum Systems, we can take our technology to a new level and accelerate deployment in the European defence sector.”

Kramer added that the experience gained in defence logistics would later inform civilian applications, particularly in supply chains and industrial transport, contributing to broader resilience and safety.

The announcement follows another move by Quantum Systems earlier this week: the creation of “Quantum Frontline Industries,” a German-Ukrainian joint venture with Frontline Robotics to establish Europe’s first fully automated, industrial-scale drone production line for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Quantum Systems’ operational experience in Ukraine has underscored the growing importance of close coordination between air and ground robotics. The acquisition of FERNRIDE, the company stated, is intended to formalize this interaction—bringing autonomous vehicles on land and in the air into a single operational framework as Europe accelerates investment in defense technology.
