Amazon will invest up to $50B to expand AI and supercomputing across AWS GovCloud, Secret, and Top Secret regions, giving U.S. agencies secure, next-gen AI infrastructure.
Amazon announced a colossal investment of up to $50 billion to dramatically expand its artificial intelligence (AI) and supercomputing capabilities for U.S. government customers through Amazon Web Services (AWS). This ambitious initiative, set to break ground in 2026, aims to deliver nearly 1.3 gigawatts of advanced computing and networking capacity across AWS’s most secure environments, including its Top Secret, Secret, and GovCloud (US) Regions.
The investment will fund the construction of new data centers equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure, giving federal agencies significantly expanded access to AWS’s comprehensive suite of AI services. This includes Amazon SageMaker AI for model training, Amazon Bedrock for deployment, and a variety of foundation models such as Amazon Nova and Anthropic Claude. The infrastructure will also feature high-performance AWS Trainium AI chips and NVIDIA AI hardware.
Accelerating Critical Government Missions
This massive injection of capital is expected to fundamentally transform how federal agencies conduct research, make decisions, and execute critical missions—from national security to scientific innovation.
The enhanced capabilities will allow government teams to:
- Accelerate Discovery: Achieve in hours what once took weeks or months by integrating simulation and modeling data with AI, using autonomous experimental steering and real-time feedback loops.
- Enhance Intelligence and Defense: Process decades of global security data and instantly analyze complex patterns. Defense and intelligence workflows that once required weeks of manual analysis will be automated to detect threats and generate response plans by processing satellite imagery and sensor data at unprecedented scale.
- Optimize Systems: Transform fragmented data on supply chains, infrastructure, and the environment into a unified, actionable picture.
AWS leadership emphasized that the move removes significant technological barriers, positioning the United States to maintain its lead in the AI era. “Our investment in purpose-built government AI and cloud infrastructure will fundamentally transform how federal agencies leverage supercomputing,” said AWS CEO Matt Garman. “We’re giving agencies expanded access to advanced AI capabilities that will enable them to accelerate critical missions from cybersecurity to drug discovery.”

The announcement reinforces AWS’s decades-long history as a leading provider of cloud services to the government, supporting more than 11,000 agencies. Its commitment to large-scale government innovation has been marked by several industry firsts, including:
- 2011: Launch of AWS GovCloud (US-West), the first cloud infrastructure built specifically to meet government security and compliance requirements.
- 2014 & 2017: Introduction of the AWS Top Secret-East and AWS Secret Regions, making it the first commercial cloud provider accredited to handle all U.S. government data classifications: Unclassified, Secret, and Top Secret.
AWS’s experience in building secure, compliant infrastructure allows federal agencies to shift focus from managing complex, on-premises systems to achieving mission outcomes.
