Virgin Media O2 partners with EkkoSense to cut energy costs and emissions by optimizing data center cooling using AI-powered real-time analytics.
Virgin Media O2 has partnered with EkkoSense to make data center cooling energy savings worth in excess of £1 million ($1.3 million) per year.
EkkoSense is a firm specializing in the provision of data center optimization software, particularly for AI data centers.
Virgin Media said this represented an average of 15 percent of savings in data cooling energy, adding that EkkoSense’s software has secured savings equivalent to 760 tonnes of carbon dioxide using location-based scope two accounting.
The Ekkosense solution, EkkoSoft Critical, uses IoT sensors to provide data to the SaaS platform, generating AI analytics, 3D visualizations, and Digital Twin capabilities.
“With our software collecting thousands of data points every five minutes – adding to the millions of data points already collected, we’re able to continually refine the effectiveness of our machine learning algorithms for Virgin Media O2,” said Dean Boyle, CEO at EkkoSense.
Adrian Lazenby, head of technical site engineering and delivery at Virgin Media O2, said: “In partnership with EkkoSense, we’ve optimized our data centers so they operate efficiently, using real-time data so we can make airflow and cooling improvements, resulting in significant cooling energy savings.”
Virgin Media O2 said it’s working to reduce its energy usage across its operations. It launched its Better Connection Plan, which pledges to achieve net zero carbon emissions by the end of 2040.

According to the company website, Virgin Media offers colocation services from its 10 data centers in the UK.
Earlier this month, Virgin Media O2 reportedly agreed to sell an eight percent stake in Britain’s largest mobile tower network, Cornerstone.
Virgin Media O2, owned by Liberty Global and Telefónica after a merger between Virgin Media and O2 in 2021, owns half of Cornerstone, which maintains and operates its mobile infrastructure in the UK.
