BT launches a UK-only sovereign data platform as cyber risks, AI growth, and stricter regulations push businesses and government agencies to keep data on home soil.
BT has unveiled a sovereign data platform designed to keep business and public-sector information firmly within Britain’s borders. This move underscores rising concerns over cybersecurity, regulatory pressure, and the rapid spread of artificial intelligence.
The platform—aimed at organizations seeking tighter control over where and how their data is held—comes as governments and enterprises increasingly treat data sovereignty not as a technical preference but as a strategic necessity.
Jon James, Chief Executive of BT Business, said the company’s scale and longstanding infrastructure make it uniquely positioned to deliver fully sovereign digital services.

“Organizations are increasingly looking for sovereignty in their services, and it’s up to us to deliver,” he said. “That means providing solutions that keep data and operations secure, compliant, resilient, and future-proofed.”
BT, the country’s largest broadband provider and owner of the Openreach fibre network, said the new platform will support upcoming voice, cloud, and AI offerings. A sovereign option across a broader suite of BT products is expected in the first half of 2026.
